Vietnamese braised beef with lemongrass

– What shall we eat today Mum? I asked my Mum when i got up around 10am. Such a lazy girl hei! :p

She told me that she’s found some beef shank in the freezer, so we decide to make braised beef with lemon grass! And it was a good decision, the braised beef is balanced of sweet and salt, plus lemon grass, very aromatic, very yummy! X

Vietnamese braised beef with lemongrass

Marinate the beef

  • 1 Tablespoon seasoning powder (if you dont have seasoning powder, you can use 3 tbs soysauce)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 stalk lemongrass, finely chop
  • 600 grams Beef shank
  • 3 garlic, finely chop
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 chilly, chop lightly if you are not a spicy-eater. Finely if you are

Mix all the ingredients together and let the beef is marinated for at least 30 mins

Cook the beef

  • 100 ml water (coconut juice)
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1/2 tablespoon seasoning powder(or to taste)
  • 2 teaspoon sugar (or to taste)
  • 3/4 stalk lemongrass, finely chop
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil

Mix water+fishsauce+seasoning powder+sugar together

Sauté lemongrass with oil on the medium heat in the pressure cooker pot. Add the marinated beef in, stir fry the beef until lightly cooked, add the water mixture in, lid on, cook for 35 minutes (or until the beef is tender)

After 35 minutes, carefully open the lid, cook until the beef is reduce the juice, season to taste.


Use this recipe like a base to make your braised beef with ginger, chilli or whatever you like

Added some pinch of chinese 5 spices or cinamon or star anise to give a lovely smell and taste. Be creative creat your own recipe. I am sure your beef will be gorgeous by the way you like! 🙂
